If ice cream isn’t quite your thing or you’re lactose intolerant shaved ice is another great alternative to try out. In Berkeley the popular shaved ice spot “Vampire Penguin” offers a huge selection of flavors as well as toppings to choose from to add to your dessert. This place normally is always crowded but the best time to come in and get your craving satisfied is in the morning right when they open at 11.
When I went here I shared three different types with my family; the black tuxedo, the s’mores, and the strawberry cheesecake. The black tuxedo one was a cookies and cream flavor shaved ice topped off with shaved almonds, strawberries, marshmallows, and drizzled with chocolate sauce. The s’mores one was the chocolate flavor shaved ice topped with marshmallows, crushed up graham crackers and oreos, and drizzled with chocolate sauce.
My favorite was the strawberry cheesecake one which was strawberry flavored shaved ice topped off with strawberries, crushed graham crackers, and drizzled with strawberry sauce and condensed milk. When grabbing a spoonful of it I was surprised with how delicate it was but when taking a bite it melted in my mouth. “Vampire Penguin” is definitely worth the try and each serving came to a low cost under $8 depending on which size you choose to get.
